MLA (Modern Language Association) style citation guide

Dear students,
You will soon be asked to cite your sources to create a bibliography for your essays.
Here is a good website that explains how to do this.

Please click on the lefthand column under "MLA" to see a few examples. For example, if you want to cite a webpage, click on "website" and you will see the following example.

Last Name, First Name. "Page Title." Website title. Sponsoring Institution/Publisher, Publication Date. Medium. Date Accessed.
Smith, John. "Obama inaugurated as President." CNN.com. Cable News Network, 21 Jan. 2009. Web. 1 Feb. 2009.

If you want to cite a book, click on "book" and you will see;

Last Name, First Name. Book Title. Publisher City: Publisher Name, Year Published. Medium.
Smith, John. The Sample Book. Pittsburgh: BibMe, 2008. Print.

Dear students, Today is your mid-term test, which is worth 20 points. Ten points will be awarded for map/outline, title, paragraph shape, thesis statment, three in-text citations in APA format, and three matching references in your "Works Cited". The other ten points will be for your writing. Remember, it is a classification essay, so you should be classifying clearly. You will have 20 minutes to look for references online, and 60 minutes to write your essay. You only need to write three intext citations and three matching references for this test, but a good essay may have more than three. Therefore, if you cite more than three sources, just put (4), (5), (6), etc. as in-text citation markers in your essay to suggest that you would need to cite these properly if you had the time. If you do copy even a few words (five or more), you should cite it in APA format. Rule 1: Don't copy sentences. Rule 2: Don't copy sentences, then change the words. January 21st Lesson

Dear students, Today is your last lesson. You will provide feedback to the university about the course, and then hand in your portfolio. Your portfolio should include your final paper (50 points) and two homework assignments (10 points each). For one assignment you should demonstrate your understanding of how to use another writer's words corrctly, to strengthen your argument and to avoid plagiarism (summary, paraphrase, direct quotation, indirect quotation). The examples you provide should have the correct MLA format for intext citations. For the second homework you should demonstrate how to construct a bibliography in MLA format. Ideally, you should show that you are comfortable compiling bibliographies from a variety of media sources. You may use examples directly from your essay if you wish.
