April 30th lesson

Dear students,
Today you will work on your first homework assignment by writing it or editing and rewriting it after a peer review. Remember to quote, paraphrase, or summarize, cite these sources, and make sure that your references conform to MLA style. If you believe that your essay is error free, or you can't find anything wrong with it any more, please show it to me and I will provide feedback.
A great essay will contain good references from reliable sources, have an intelligent opinion, and will be new and interesting to me.

PS. The essay that you wrote last week might not be the right topic to be one of your four 10-point homework assignments. Nevertheless, please keep it in your portfolio to hand in at the end of the semester.

Week 8 lesson - Mid-term Test

Dear students, Today is your mid-term test, which is worth 20 points. Ten points will be awarded for map/outline, title, paragraph shape, thesis statment, three in-text citations in APA format, and three matching references in your "Works Cited". The other ten points will be for your writing. Remember, it is a classification essay, so you should be classifying clearly. You will have 20 minutes to look for references online, and 60 minutes to write your essay. You only need to write three intext citations and three matching references for this test, but a good essay may have more than three. Therefore, if you cite more than three sources, just put (4), (5), (6), etc. as in-text citation markers in your essay to suggest that you would need to cite these properly if you had the time. Dear students, Hello again. Today you will look at APA formatted in-text citations and APA formatted references. Mostly we will focus on in-text citations. A couple of common mistakes for Homework One was; • not putting the in-text citation within a sentence ..... (Shakespeare, 2019) incorrect .... If you do copy even a few words (five or more), you should cite it in APA format. Rule 1: Don't copy sentences. Rule 2: Don't copy sentences, then change the words. January 21st Lesson

Dear students, Today is your last lesson. You will provide feedback to the university about the course, and then hand in your portfolio. Your portfolio should include your final paper (50 points) and two homework assignments (10 points each). For one assignment you should demonstrate your understanding of how to use another writer's words corrctly, to strengthen your argument and to avoid plagiarism (summary, paraphrase, direct quotation, indirect quotation). The examples you provide should have the correct MLA format for intext citations. For the second homework you should demonstrate how to construct a bibliography in MLA format. Ideally, you should show that you are comfortable compiling bibliographies from a variety of media sources. You may use examples directly from your essay if you wish. Please don't worry too much about these homework assignments. If you can clearly understand the concepts I will be happy and you will earn full marks. Kind regards...
